Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story Of A Serial Killer, a banned Pakistani film, will have its international premiere at the 24th UK Asian Film Festival’s Opening Gala. The film will now be released as the year’s opening blockbuster in 2022.
This is a huge achievement for Pakistan that the movie will be premiered internationally. However, the film got banned in Pakistan a few days before its release.
The movie portrays the untold story of Javed Iqbal, a reputed serial killer from Lahore. He confessed to detectives and the media that between 1998 and 1999, he abducted, sexually molested, and murdered around 100 adolescents in Lahore.
He was caught and given the death penalty. He apparently committed suicide in his prison cell just two years into his sentence. His brutal activities were thought to be part of a larger paedophile ring by investigators.
Actor Yasir Hussain took to social media to reveal that film Javed Iqbal, which is banned in Pakistan is all set to be premiered in UK Asian Film Festival 2022.
While putting up the post, he captioned:
Yeh bohot fakhar ki baat hai k UK Asian film festival hamari movie ko itni izzat de raha hai magar afsos hai k hum kabhi apna content aur apny log pehchan nahi paaty. Pakistan mai yeh Pakistani kahani ban ho gai magar eid pe aap apny culture pe banai gai 5 movies zaroor dekhiye ga.
The premiere will take place on May 4 at London’s BFI Southbank.
Despite having clearance from all censor boards, Punjab government stopped the showing of Javed Iqbal. The actors expressed their disappointment on social media and filed a petition against this decision in Lahore high court.
Directed by Abu Aleeha, Yasir Hussain and Ayesha Omar are starred in the lead roles.
