Unilever Pakistan announces to rename its “Fair & Lovely” skincare brand after facing a backlash. They will remove the word ‘fair’ as controversy grows over the use of skin-lightening products. The brand will not include words like lightening, whitening and fairness etc in the name.
In accordance with some details, an online petition was launched by three Pakistani women named Hira Hashmi, Anum Chandani, and Marvi Ahmed to interdict ‘Fair and Lovely’. The petition was followed in recent weeks in response to protests against racial bigotry triggered by the death of George Floyd, a 46-year old Black man, at the hands of police in America.
In response to the uproar, Unilever took it on Twitter to shed light on this matter:
We’re committed to a skin care portfolio that's inclusive of all skin tones, celebrating the diversity of beauty. That’s why we’re removing the words ‘fairness’, ‘whitening’ & ‘lightening’ from products, and changing the Fair & Lovely brand name.https://t.co/W3tHn6dHqE
